The Kingdom’s second largest Internet service provider, Menatelecom said yesterday it signed an agreement with global communications major, Motorola, to boost its WiMAX network capacity and coverage in Bahrain to handle 100,000 subscribers. This comes close on the heels of the company recording a sharp increase in its broadband subscriber base, which exceeded 45,000 subscribers within 18 months of its operations. The telecommunications provider, an investment subsidiary of Kuwait Finance House – Bahrain, said the number was expected to ‘rise significantly in the coming year’, mandating the major capacity boost initiative. “We were able to maintain and increase our growth expectations in terms of financial and operational parameters. This means that we remain on course to achieving our goal of being one of the top operators in the region,” said Abdulhakeem Al Khayyat, Chairman of Menatelecom and Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Kuwait Finance House – Bahrain. “Our growth is fuelled by the success of our products and through successful investment in new technologies. We are moving to expand our service portfolio steadily as we look to consolidate our market position and realize our long-term goals,” he said.
